Singh: Cane farmers rewarded for productivity

I have delivered a promise that I made to sugarcane farmers, said Minister of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh after the payment of $1million to productive farmers.

Mr Singh said as the minister responsible for the sugar industry, he was concerned about the lack of incentives and rewards for cane farmers who had been putting additional efforts to increase their production.

“As a minister, I have not heard of cane farmers been rewarded for increasing their yield, but as I had promised, the Ministry of Sugar Industry has for the first time paid a total of $1,094,733 to 4924 farmers”, he said.

“These farmers have been rewarded for increasing their cane production in 2023 and are paid $5 per tonne for additional cane they delivered in 2023 against the 2022 season.

“In addition to the $5 per tonne payment made in October 2023 to reach $91.38 per tonne for 2022 season crop, this incentive is yet another promise delivered by the Coalition Government.”

Mr Singh said he was thankful to the Coalition Government for its commitment to the sugar industry.

“Such initiatives and incentives will continue in future. I am thankful to the cane farmers who are dedicated and supporting the industry despite the challenges faced by them.

“The ministry will continue working with all the stakeholders to sustain the future of sugarcane industry.”
