Strengthening El Niño threatens India’s oilseed crops
Strengthening El Niño conditions and forecasts of below-normal rainfall threaten India’s rain-fed oilseed and cotton regions despite kharif sowing reaching 53.13 million hectares. With the sowing gap narrowing to 1.81 million hectares, persistent moisture deficits could reduce yields and increase agricultural market uncertainty.
Strengthening El Niño conditions and forecasts of below-normal rainfall over the coming weeks could negatively affect the development of oilseed and cotton crops in India. According to a report by Dolat Capital, the greatest risks are concentrated in rain-fed agricultural regions that depend heavily on the monsoon.
Despite the weather concerns, kharif sowing continues to progress steadily. The total planted area has reached 53.13 mln ha, while the gap compared with the five-year average has narrowed to 1.81 mln ha.
However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects rainfall to remain below normal over the next two weeks. If the moisture deficit persists, it could weaken crop conditions, reduce oilseed and cotton yields, and increase uncertainty in India’s agricultural markets.
