Sugar industry must evolve into multiproduct biomass sector: Jayant Patil
Former Maharashtra minister Jayant Patil has urged the sugar industry to shift from conventional sugar production to a multiproduct biomass sector, expanding into ethanol, biogas, bio-CNG and other value-added products. He also stressed the adoption of AI and advanced technologies to improve efficiency, modernise mills and strengthen their economic viability.
Pune: The sugar industry must move beyond conventional sugar production and transform itself into a multiproduct biomass sector by expanding into ethanol, biogas, bio-CNG and other value-added products, former Maharashtra minister Jayant Patil said, The Times of India reported.
Speaking at the 71st annual convention of the Deccan Sugar Technologies Association (DSTA) and the inauguration of a sugar exhibition, Patil said diversification was essential to improve the economic viability of the sugar industry.
He also called on sugar mills to adopt artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies to improve operational efficiency and modernise their operations.
Patil said the industry should make better use of sugarcane and its by-products to create additional revenue streams rather than relying primarily on sugar production.
The DSTA convention brought together representatives of the sugar industry and technology sector to discuss emerging technologies and the future of sugar production.
