Sugarcane waste to clean energy: Shell Philippines inks deal for biomass power

Shell Energy Philippines secures off-take agreement with Thomas Lloyd’s North Negros Biopower Inc. for biomass plant in Negros Occidental. Plant uses sugarcane waste for sustainable energy, benefiting local community. Operating since January 2020, it generates 185 million kWh annually. Initiative aims to convert cane trash into clean energy, reducing harmful open-field burning.

Shell Energy Philippines has secured an off take agreement with the Thomas Lloyd Group’s North Negros Biopower Inc. for its biomass plant in Negros Occidental.

Thomas Lloyd is a leading independent impact investment manager headquartered in Zurich.

According to Shell Energy CEO Bernd Krukenberg, the biomass plant utilizes sugarcane waste as fuel. This not only provides a sustainable power supply but also supports the local Negros community.

Shell Energy Philippines, formerly known as Manta Energy, Inc., is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell that operates in the Philippine power market. They focus on retail electricity supply and trading.

North Negros BioPower, operational since January 2020, boasts a capacity of 25 megawatts and generates roughly 185 million kWh of electricity annually. This project is part of a larger initiative by the BioPower Group, utilizing sugarcane residues sourced locally within Negros Island as a renewable fuel source.

Sugarcane farming in Negros produces significant amounts of leftover plant material called cane trash. Traditionally, this waste is burned in open fields. The North Negros BioPower plant offers a solution by converting this waste into clean energy, significantly reducing the harmful practice of open field burning without requiring additional investment from sugarcane planters.
