Tamil Nadu : Cane-crushing operation begins at co-operative sugar mill in Villupuram
The 2024-25 cane-crushing season commenced at the Chengalrayan Co-operative Sugar Mill in Periyasevalai. About 4,000 farmers cultivating sugarcane on 9,987 acres have registered to supply an expected 2.75 lakh tonnes of cane this season. Farmers will receive ₹3,151 per tonne, with an additional ₹215 per tonne incentive provided to those who participated in the 2023-24 season. A total of ₹7.37 crore in incentives was credited directly to farmers’ accounts. The season was inaugurated by Minister for Forests K. Ponmudy.
The cane-crushing season for 2024-25 began at the public-sector Chengalrayan co-operative sugar mill at Periyasevalai on Wednesday.
Sugarcane raised on about 9,987 acres by nearly 4,000 farmers has been registered for supply to the mill for the current season. About 2.75 lakh tonnes of sugarcane were expected to be crushed at the mill during the season.
The crushing season was formally inaugurated by Minister for Forests K. Ponmudy.
According to a press release, farmers would be paid ₹3,151 per tonne of cane. In order to encourage members of the society, who had registered and crushed cane in the last crushing season of 2023-24, a support incentive of ₹215 a tonne was issued. A total of ₹7.37 crore was directly credited to the accounts of members of the sugar cooperative society.
