Tamil Nadu : TNAU forecasts farm gate price of quality maize at ₹2,200-₹2,400 per quintal

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University forecasts good-quality maize farm-gate prices at ₹2,200–2,400 per quintal during harvest, supported by demand from feed, ethanol and bioplastics industries. However, below-normal monsoon rainfall linked to El Niño could affect production in major maize-growing states.

Predicting that farm gate price of good quality maize would be in the range of ₹2,200-₹2,400 a quintal during harvest, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has advised agriculturists to take appropriate farming decision.

The Pre-Sowing Price Forecast for Maize is based on a market survey by the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) of Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies after studying the rates in the Udumalpet regulated market for the past 15 years.

Though Tamil Nadu accounted for 3.3 million tonnes of production from 0.54 million hectares largely from Salem, Namakkal, Dindigul, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Viluppuram, and Tiruppur districts, 50% of the demand was still met with arrivals from other States.

Demand for maize was driven by the feed industry, industrial usage, ethanol blending initiatives of National Policy on Bio-fuels, and bio plastic usage, a TNAU press release said.

With the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting below normal rainfall during the current South West Monsoon characterised by El Nino climate phenomenon, crop production in major maize producing States viz., Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal would be affected, the TNAU release said.
