Telangana: Sugarcane farmers warn of stir if issues not resolved Telangana

The Telangana Rythu Sangam is set to hold a state-level meeting of sugarcane growers in Nelakondapally on November 23 to discuss a future action plan regarding their concerns. T. Sagar, the state general secretary, criticized the Centre’s decision to allow sugar imports, which he said is harming farmers and could lead to sugar mill closures.

Khammam: The Telangana Rythu Sangam will hold a state-level meeting of sugarcane growers at Nelakondapally on November 23 to develop their future action plan for agitating against their issues. The Sangam’s state general secretary, T. Sagar, released a publicity poster in this regard on Friday. Sagar stated that the Centre has permitted corporates to import sugar from other countries, which has adversely impacted the interests of sugarcane farmers. He added that this could also lead to the shutdown of sugar companies in the country.

He urged the state government to withdraw the draft ‘Sugar (Control) Order, 2024,’ which permits the sale of raw sugar in the domestic market, effectively replacing a six-decade-old rule that restricted this commodity to exports only. Additionally, he called on the state government to announce a state advisory price for sugarcane, similar to the provisions in Haryana and Punjab. Sagar cautioned that a statewide agitation would be launched if the Centre and the state government fail to resolve the issues facing sugarcane farmers.
