Topsoe to support Sustainable Aviation Fuel Project in Brazil
Topsoe and Refinaria de Petróleo Riograndense SA are collaborating to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel in Rio Grande, Brazil. With SAF comprising only 0.2% of global jet fuel in 2023, this initiative addresses aviation’s push for net-zero carbon by 2050. Utilizing Topsoe’s HydroFlex technology, the partnership advances Brazil’s renewable energy leadership.
Topsoe, a global leader in carbon reduction technologies, has joined forces with Refinaria de Petróleo Riograndense SA (Riograndense) to advance sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel production. The initiative will take place at Riograndense’s renewable fuels facility in Rio Grande, Brazil, according to a report from Biodiesel Magazine.
This partnership comes at a pivotal moment as the aviation industry faces increasing pressure to adopt greener practices. The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2030, at least 10% of aviation fuel must come from SAF to meet the 2050 net-zero carbon emission target. Currently, SAF usage remains minimal, making up just 0.2% of global jet fuel consumption in 2023, according to the International Air Transport Association.
Elena Scaltritti, Topsoe’s chief commercial officer, highlighted Brazil’s efforts to cut airline emissions and commended Riograndense’s proactive approach. “Riograndense is taking a key step to ensure SAF is available for airlines in time. We’re excited to work with them to expand renewable fuel supplies in Brazil,” she said.
Felipe Jorge, managing director of Riograndense, described the partnership as a milestone for the company. “Topsoe is the ideal partner to help us fully transition to a biorefinery and become a leader in SAF production in Brazil,” he stated.
As part of this alliance, the company will be promoting HydroFlex technology in projects worldwide. It has agreed with the German facilities, Canada, Spanish facilities, and China facilities, making it the company behind the move toward greener energy for the world.–
