Turkey to cut sunflower seed import duty to 12% ahead of schedule
Turkey will cut its sunflower seed import duty from 20% to 12% from October 1, 2026, nearly two months early, to secure affordable supplies amid Black Sea disruptions and drought. The move is expected to boost imports, support crushers and help contain refined sunflower oil prices.
Turkey will reduce its import duty on sunflower seed from 20% to 12% starting October 1, 2026. The tariff cut will take effect almost two months earlier than initially scheduled, as the lower rate was previously due to apply from November 30.
According to Turkey’s Trade Ministry, the decision is aimed at providing domestic sunflower oil producers with more affordable raw materials amid growing supply risks. The ministry cited disruptions in the Black Sea region and drought in Europe among the key factors behind the move.
Under current regulations, Turkey applies a 20% import duty on sunflower seed during the harvest period to support domestic producers. The rate normally falls to 12% between November 30 and June 15, but this season the lower tariff will take effect from the beginning of October.
The early tariff reduction is expected to make imported sunflower seed more accessible to Turkish crushers and help contain production costs. The Turkish authorities also expect the measure to prevent an increase in consumer prices for refined sunflower oil.
Turkey’s decision could boost demand for imported sunflower seed at the beginning of the new season, particularly from Black Sea suppliers. The tariff cut coincides with the arrival of the new crop on the market and will make imported sunflower seed more attractive to Turkish processors.
