UNICA: Rain impacts sugarcane harvest in late October

UNICA reported a 21.64% drop in sugarcane processing in Brazil’s south-central region during late October due to rain. Ethanol production fell 8%, but corn ethanol rose 33.25%. Total ethanol sales increased 4.65% year-on-year in October, with hydrous and anhydrous ethanol up 6.27% and 13.21%, respectively.

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sugarcane processing during the second half of October was down significantly as rain disrupted harvest activities. Ethanol production was down, but sales were up. 

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 27.17 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of October, down 21.64% when compared to the same period of last year. Total sugarcane processing since the start of the current harvest season, which began April 1, reached 566.03 million metric tons, up 0.88%. 

Mills in the region produced 1.64 billion liters (433.24 million gallons) of ethanol during the second half of October. Production included 990.3 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 8.22%, and 650.3 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 8.03%. Corn ethanol accounted for 257.92 million liters, or 21.8% of production during the two-week period, up 33.25% when compared to the same period of last year. 

Total ethanol production since the start of the current harvest season reached 28.85 billion liters, up 6.87%. Production included 18.38 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 15.11%, and 10.46 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 5.08%. Corn ethanol accounted for 4.49 billion liters of production, up 27.8% when compared to the same period of last year. 

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil sold 3.03 billion liters of ethanol in October, up 4.65% when compared to the same month of last year. Domestic sales included 1.82 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 6.27%, and 1.09 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 13.21%. 

Toa sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 20.86 billion liters, up 14.38%. Sales included 13.49 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 25.96%, and 7.37 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 2.09%.
