UNICA Reports Record Ethanol Production, Sugarcane Processing For 2023-’24 Harvest Season

A record volume of sugarcane was processed during Brazil’s recently completed 2023-’24 harvest season, according to UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association. Ethanol production also set a new record, with a significant boost from corn. 

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 5.04 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of March, compared to 4.73 million metric tons processed during the same period of last year. 

Mills in the region processed a record 654.43 million metric tons of sugarcane during the 2023-’24 harvest season, which concluded March 31. Sugarcane processing was up 12.29% when compared to the previous harvest season. 

Ethanol production during the last two weeks of march reached 528.24 million liters (139.55 million gallons), up 37.42 percent when compared to the same period of 2023. Production included 429.37 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 92.87%, and 98.87 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 38.89%. Corn ethanol accounted for 302.65 million liters of production.

Mills in the region produced 33.59 billion liters of ethanol during the 2023-’24 harvest season. Production was up 16.16% when compared to the 2022-’23 harvest, and up 1.01% when compared to previous record, with was set at 33.26 billion liters during the 2019-’20 harvest season.

Ethanol production for the 2023-’24 harvest season included 20.49 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 23.23%, and 13.1 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 6.61%. Corn ethanol accounted for 6.26 billion liters of production, up 41.39% and accounting for 18.65% of total ethanol production.

Mills in the south-central region sold 3.01 billion liters of ethanol in March, including 2.77 billion liters that were sold domestically and 247.94 million liters that were destined for export. Domestic sales included 1.83 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 59.25%, and 937.47 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 0.96%. 

Total ethanol sales for the 2023’24 harvest season were at 32.8 billion liters, up 12.72%. Sales included 20.07 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 21%, and 12.73 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 1.75%. 

Domestic hydrous ethanol sales for the 2023-’24 harvest season reached 18.65 billion liters, up 20.65% when compared to the previous harvest season. Domestic sales of anhydrous ethanol reached 11.67 billion liters, up 5.73%. 

Exports for the 2023’24 harvest season reached 2.48 billion liters, down 4.72%, including 142 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 25.79%, and 1.06 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 28.07%.
