UP government pushes sugar mills for early start as prices continue to rise

Uttar Pradesh has directed sugar mills to begin crushing by October 15, 15 days earlier than last year, to boost market supplies and curb rising sugar prices. The move is also expected to benefit farmers by providing timely cane procurement and allowing them to prepare fields for wheat sowing.

Sugar prices have been rising sharply, prompting the Uttar Pradesh government to take steps to increase availability and bring prices under control, The Daily Jagran reported. Along with action against black marketing, the state government is now pushing sugar mills to begin operations ahead of schedule, the report said.

Uttar Pradesh Cane Commissioner Ministhy S has directed officials to encourage sugar mill operators to begin operations by October 15. In an official communication sent to departmental officials as well as chairpersons and general managers of sugar mills, the commissioner asked them to ensure that mills start operations 15 days earlier than last year.

Under the new arrangement, sugar mills that begin production in October will be allowed to sell the sugar produced during the month in October and November. The move is aimed at increasing supplies in the market and helping bring down soaring sugar prices.

Officials expect prices to ease once the additional sugar produced in October reaches the market.

The early start to the crushing season is also expected to benefit thousands of sugarcane farmers. With mills beginning operations sooner, farmers will have more time to prepare their land and sow wheat during the appropriate planting period.
