US ethanol fuel output capacity, expansions
U.S. demand for ethanol is set to increase sharply in the coming months as the oil industry uses it as a replacement for gasoline additive MTBE, a suspected carcinogen banned in several states for polluting water.
Current U.S. ethanol production is roughly 4.798 billion gallons per year (gpy), or 330,000 barrels per day, and will need to increase by around 1.5 billion gpy, or 100,000 bpd, to meet the higher demand.
Expansion plans already in the books could eventually make up for this increase in ethanol demand, but some of the projects may take years to come on line.
In the meantime, shortfalls are expected to be made up through imports from other major ethanol producers like Brazil, government and industry experts said.
