Uttar Pradesh: Demand to stop transportation of sugarcane from district to Bihar
Concerns in Kushinagar have arisen over sugarcane transport to Bihar despite restrictions, risking impacts on local farmers and mills. Manoj Modanwal of the Indian Industry Integration Trade Union highlighted the decline of operational sugar mills in the district and unpaid farmer dues. He urged authorities to enforce bans on sugarcane transport to Bihar and revive closed mills to support local agriculture and industry.
Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh: As the sugarcane crushing season starts, the transportation of sugarcane from the district to Bihar has raised concerns. Manoj Modanwal, City Vice President of the Indian Industry Integration Trade Union, has called for action to stop this practice, reported Live Hindustan.
Speaking on Friday, Modanwal highlighted the declining number of operational sugar mills in the district. “At one time, there were nine sugar mills in the district, but now only few are left. The closed mills owe crores of rupees to farmers, yet no steps are being taken to revive them or clear the pending payments,” he said.
He also pointed out that the transport of sugarcane to Bihar violates existing restrictions. “There is a ban on sending sugarcane from this district to Bihar. Authorities must strictly enforce this prohibition to ensure local farmers and the remaining mills are not affected,” he stated.
Modanwal urged the government to address the issue promptly to support farmers and protect the district’s sugar industry.
