Dehradun: Members of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) Kranti staged a unique protest in Uttarakhand on Wednesday, demanding payment of pending cane dues and the prompt announcement of sugarcane prices for the new crushing season, reported Amar Ujala.
National President Vikas Singh Saini pointed out that despite the new sugarcane crushing season having started weeks ago, payments for the previous season are still pending.
“The mills continue to take sugarcane from farmers, but the government has yet to declare the price for it. We demand that the price be set at ₹500 per quintal,” Saini said.
Farmer leader Kukka Singh Rajput raised concerns about power companies disconnecting the electricity connections of farmers over unpaid bills. “How can farmers pay their electricity bills when sugar mills owe them payments? The government must first ensure that mills clear their dues,” he added.
