Uzbekistan to cut wheat imports by 27% amid domestic harvest growth
Uzbekistan is projected to cut wheat imports by 27.3% to 4 million tonnes in MY 2026/27 due to a larger domestic harvest, while exports may rise 31.6% to 2.5 million tonnes, USDA said. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan’s key supplier, is expected to reduce wheat exports to 9 million tonnes.
In the MY 2026/27, Uzbekistan will reduce its wheat imports from 5.5 million to 4 million tons (-27.3%). This forecast is contained in the May Wheat Outlook report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
According to the USDA, the decrease in imports is due to an expected increase in the domestic harvest. The agency included Uzbekistan among net importing countries expecting a higher wheat harvest in the new season.
At the same time, the USDA forecasts an increase in wheat exports from Uzbekistan – from 1.9 million to 2.5 million tons (+31.6%).
The report notes that the global wheat market will contract in the 2026/27 marketing year: global imports will decrease by 10.9 million tons, and exports by 10.3 million tons.
At the same time, Kazakhstan, which remains Uzbekistan’s main grain supplier, will reduce its wheat exports from 12 million to 9 million tons.
