Vietnam extends duties on Thai sugar imports until 2031 to protect domestic industry
Vietnam has extended anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on Thai sugar imports until June 2031 following a sunset review. Duties range from 25.73% to 42.99%, plus a 4.65% subsidy duty for some exporters. Authorities said the measures protect Vietnam’s sugar industry from unfairly priced Thai imports.
Hanoi: Vietnam has extended anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on selected sugar imports from Thailand for another five years, keeping the trade measures in place until mid-2031 as the country seeks to safeguard its domestic sugar industry.
The decision, announced by the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, will take effect from June 16 following a sunset review that concluded Thai sugar producers were likely to continue or resume dumping and receiving subsidies if the duties were removed, Reuters reported.
According to the ministry, lifting the measures could cause continued harm to Vietnam’s domestic sugar sector, prompting authorities to maintain the existing trade protections.
Under the revised framework, sugar producers associated with the Mitr Phol Group will be subject to an anti-dumping duty of 32.75%, with no countervailing duty applied.
Companies linked to the Thai Roong Ruang Group will face an anti-dumping duty of 25.73% along with a 4.65% anti-subsidy duty.
All other Thai sugar exporters will be subject to the highest combined rates, including a 42.99% anti-dumping duty and a 4.65% countervailing duty.
The duties apply to a range of raw and refined cane sugar products covered under six harmonized system codes.
Vietnamese authorities said customs agencies will continue monitoring imports to prevent attempts to circumvent the tariffs and ensure compliance with the trade measures.
The extension provides continued protection for Vietnam’s sugar industry, which has argued that low-priced sugar imports from Thailand have placed pressure on domestic producers and sugar mills in recent years.
