Wheat Price Increases by 8 Rupees Per Kilo in Nepal Due to Indian Price Hike
Wheat prices in Nepal have increased from NPR 42 to NPR 50 per kilogram following a rise in Indian prices, squeezing flour mill operators. Mills are operating at 50% capacity, while existing stocks cover only one month. Prices may remain elevated until fresh wheat arrives.
Kathmandu. The price of wheat, which was 42 rupees per kilo in Baishakh, has increased to 50 rupees. Flour mill operators have stated that the price of wheat in Nepal has increased by 8 rupees per kilo after the price increase in India.
The Nepal Flour Mill Association has stated that industries that use wheat as a raw material are facing difficulties due to the increase in wheat prices. According to the association’s vice-president, Bikash Begwani, there is no immediate problem as the industries currently have enough wheat stock to last for about a month.
Begwani said that the price will not decrease until the Indian government opens up its existing wheat stock for sale.
The association has stated that there is no problem with imports as the Indian government removed the wheat quota about two months ago, i.e., from August 24, 2026. It has been stated that the prices of food items made from wheat may increase as it will take until mid-Chaitra for new wheat to arrive in Nepal.
Due to the wheat shortage, flour mills in Nepal are currently operating at 50 percent capacity.
