Training opens up new ideas
THE recent 12-day visitation and training of 14 canegrowers in India has opened up new ideas for cane farming practices to be implemented here.
Sugar Cane Growers Council CEO Vimal Dutt said the training for the Fiji delegation at the National Sugar Institute in Kanpur, India, plus visits to sugarcane producing areas and sugar mills have been very successful.
“The grower interaction was quite helpful and it was something out of their expectation, a good learning experience,” Mr Dutt said.
Crop management practices and planting methods, he said, were some of the key insights captured by the growers.
“We will soon have a post training session with them and we will want to know the practices they will be implementing in their farms.
“These practices can later be showcased to other farms and could be adopted by them as well.”
Mr Dutt said India, one of the largest sugar cane producing countries globally, also uses innovative farming implements in maintaining ratoon crops. “We would like them to adopt similar practices, thus it would boost our production.”
