Overfill in Karnal mandis as 50% of procured wheat still not lifted
KARNAL: As many as 6.53 lakh metric tones of wheat has been produced in Karnal district, but around 50% of procured wheat is still lying in various grain markets of the district, which has led to a glut in the mandis.
The farmers and Arhtiyas complained that they were facing problems unloading their produce as heaps of procured wheat bags and unprocured wheat were lying in the mandis, even the wheat stock lying in the open got drenched at some purchase centres in the district on Wednesday.
As per the official figures, around 6,53,486 metric tones of wheat was procured by procurement agencies from 92,053 farmers at various procurement centres in Karnal till April 19, out of which 3,23,129 MT of procured produce is still lying in the grain markets.
The food and supplies department procured 2,80,124 MT but lifted only 1,43,969 MT while Hafed procured 3,36,903 MT and lifted 1,71,658 MT, and Haryana State
Warehousing Corporation lifted 14,730 MT against the procurement of 36,459 MT.
Farmers said the state government should make adequate arrangements to lift the crop on time.
Satnam Singh, a farmer, who brought his produce at Assandh mandi, said, “Slon lifting has caused a glut like situation. Farmers are facing problems unloading their crops. So, the lifting process should be speeded up.”
Virender Singh, district food and supply controller, said that around 50% procured wheat has been lifted and efforts are being made to speed up the lifting process further.
