UNICA: Sugarcane processing slows in late September

Brazil’s UNICA reported a 13.62% decline in sugarcane processing in the south-central region during late September 2024, but total processing since April reached 505.08 million tons, up 2.35%. Ethanol production during this period rose, particularly hydrous ethanol (up 3.33%), while corn ethanol production surged by 38.33%. Total ethanol production for the harvest season increased by 7.44%, with significant gains in hydrous ethanol sales, which climbed 30.74%. However, anhydrous ethanol production saw a slight drop compared to last year.

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sugarcane processing was down in late September but still trending higher than last year. Ethanol production and sales are up when compared to last year. 

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 38.83 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of September, down 13.62% when compared to the same period of last year. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, reached 505.08 million tons, up 2.35% when compared to the same period of last year. 

Mills in the region produced 2.24 billion liters (591.75 million gallons) of ethanol during the second half of September. Production included 1.44 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 3.33%, and 792.4 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 4.89%. Corn accounted for 329.84 million liters, or 15%, of total production, up when compared to the 238.45 million liters of corn ethanol produced during the same period of 2023. 

Total ethanol production since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 25.20 billion liters, up 7.44%. Production included 16.11 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 16.43%, and 9.1 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 5.5%. Corn ethanol accounted for 3.8 billion liters of production, up 26.99% when compared to the same period of last year. 

Mills in the south-central region sold 2.94 billion liters of ethanol in September, up 6.24% when compared to the same month of last year. Domestic sales included 1.73 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 4.36%, and 1.03 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 10.72%. 

Total ethanol sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 17.84 billion liters, up 16.23%. Sales included 11.58 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 30.74%, and 6.25 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 3.58%.
