Maharashtra’s sugar mills clear 99.92 per cent cane dues in season 2023-24

Maharashtra sugar mills have cleared 99.92% of dues for the 2023-24 season, paying ₹36,732 crore, while Karnataka achieved 100% clearance with ₹19,890 crore. This reflects effective government policies ensuring timely farmer payments, boosting agricultural stability.

In a major boost for India’s sugarcane sector, sugar mills in top-producing states have made significant progress in paying farmers for the 2023-24 season. Maharashtra, a leading sugar producer, has cleared 99.92 per cent of its dues, totaling Rs 36,732 crore.

According to the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), with 99.92 per cent of cane dues cleared in sugar season 2023-24, Maharashtra’s sugar mills have paid out Rs 36,732 crore to farmers.

In a similar vein, Karnataka also performed better in terms of making payments. As of November 14, 2024, Karnataka’s sugar mills have cleared 100 per cent of the cane dues for the 2023-24 season, with Rs 19,890 crore paid to farmers.

This accomplishment reflects the success of government policies aimed at securing fair and timely payments for farmers, which have contributed to greater stability in the agricultural sector. Both Maharashtra and Karnataka’s efforts in making timely payments align with broader initiatives across India’s sugar-producing states, which have made significant progress in clearing outstanding dues.
