Action within 24 hrs against erring sugar factories: Min, Karnataka
Karnataka’s Sugar Minister Shivanand Patil assured farmers of action within 24 hours against sugarcane weighing fraud. He encouraged complaints with a ₹1 lakh reward and promised cane-crushing support. Digital weighing machines will be installed despite industry opposition. The government plans to revive closed cooperative sugar factories with low-interest loans, shifting the Sugar Commissioner’s office to Belagavi for better oversight.
Belagavi: Sugar minister Shivanand Patil assured farmers that govt will initiate action within 24 hours if any farmer registers a complaint about fraud in weighing cane in sugar factories.He was speaking after receiving a memorandum from the workers of Karnataka Rajya Rait Sangh and Hasiru Sene, who were protesting at the Suvarna Garden near Suvarna Vidhana Soudha (SVS) on Monday.”The farmers don’t need to be scared of registering a complaint. Govt will stand with farmers by registering criminal cases. Besides, govt will reward Rs 1 lakh to such complainants and even take responsibility for crushing their sugarcane,” the minister assured.According to Patil, govt decided to install digital weighing machines in various locations, especially in sugarcane growing areas. “Some sugar industries have approached the court opposing govt’s move, but govt was firm in its decision to protect the interests of the sugarcane farmers,” he clarified.
Meanwhile, the minister announced that shortly the sugar commissioner officer would be shifted to Belagavi from Bengaluru. “Govt also intends to protect the cooperative sugar factories, especially those that have stopped functioning due to various reasons, by restarting them,” he stated.There are 30 cooperative sugar factories in the state, but only 13 of them are functioning. The last govt decided to hand over the closed cooperative sugar factories to private entities on a lease basis. “Our govt has planned to revamp such debt-ridden factories by sanctioning them loans at low interest rates,” he said.MLAs NH Konareddy, Darshan Puttannaiah, farmers’ leaders Chunappa Pujeri, Prakash Naik, Pacche Nanjundaswamy, and Shashikant Naik were present.
