Odisha : ACSIL hikes procurement price of sugarcane to Rs 3,500/tonne

The Aska Cooperative Sugar Industries Limited (ACSIL) raised sugarcane prices by ₹420 per tonne to ₹3,500 this year. The factory will cover transportation costs beyond 10 km. Ganjam farmers demanded ₹4,500 per tonne and sought a ₹1,000 government input subsidy. ACSIL plans to begin crushing on January 17, targeting 50,000 MT, up from last year’s 49,255 MT.

Berhampur: Managing committee of Aska Cooperative Sugar Industries Limited (ACSIL) increased sugarcane price by Rs 420 per tonne to Rs 3,500 this year. The factory provided Rs 3,080 per tonne of sugarcane last year. “The factory will also bear the transportation charge of sugarcane beyond a 10-km distance,” Sushant Kumar Panda, managing director of ACSIL, said on Friday. “Considering all aspects, including the financial condition of the factory and the cost factor in sugarcane cultivation, the managing committee, in its meeting held on Thursday, has fixed the price of cane at Rs 3,500 per tonne in consultation with the district administration,” he said. Earlier, Ganjam district sugarcane growers association demanded to fix the cane price at Rs 4,500 per tonne and threatened not to supply their crop if the factory authorities did not consider their demands.

“Now we have appealed to the govt to provide an additional Rs 1,000 per tonne of sugarcane as an input subsidy to sugarcane growers,” said Sameer Pradhan, president of the association. “When the govt has provided input subsidies to farmers of several other crops, including paddy for Rs 800, why not for do it for sugarcane growers?” asked Purna Chandra Barad, secretary of the association. The factory decided to commence crushing from Jan 17 and set a target of over 50,000 MT this year. Last year, the factory crushed 49,255 MT of sugarcane, Panda said. Last year, it provided Rs 16.37 crore to farmers to purchase sugarcane. This year, the amount might increase to Rs 18 crore, he added. Panda said this time they have also decided to procure sugarcane from different areas in adjoining Nayagarh and Khurda districts.
