Rise in wheat procurement benefits farmers in Varanasi division


Wheat procurement in Varanasi division surged by 3,746.88 metric tons this year, with 9,711.59 metric tons collected so far. The government is purchasing directly from farmers’ homes via mobile vans, waiving verification for up to 100 quintals, and paying ₹2,425 per quintal plus ₹20 for cleaning. Payments are credited within 48 hours to Aadhaar-linked accounts.
Varanasi: Wheat procurement witnessed a significant increase of 3,746.88 metric tons this year in the four districts of the Varanasi division, including Varanasi, Chandauli, Ghazipur, and Jaunpur, as compared to 2024.
The govt has ensured fair prices for crops and is purchasing them directly from the farmers’ homes. This initiative saves farmers transportation costs and frees them from middlemen. The govt is buying wheat from farmers even without verification, focusing on their welfare. So far, 9,711.59 metric tons of wheat were procured in these four districts. The regional food marketing officer, Pradeep Kumar Kushwaha, said that to ensure that the farmers receive fair compensation, the govt has made comprehensive arrangements. Mobile vans are being sent door-to-door to purchase crops. The govt has set a target to procure 127,500 metric tons of wheat in the Varanasi division, he said. So far, 9,711.59 metric tons were procured across these districts. There are 332 wheat procurement centres in the division, managed by seven agencies. An average of 9,000 quintals of wheat is being purchased daily. The govt is also buying wheat from the farmers who haven’t been able to register.
He said payments are being made to farmers’ accounts linked to their Aadhaar within 48 hours of wheat procurement. This year, the govt set the support price at Rs 2,425 per quintal, which is Rs 150 higher than last year’s Rs 2,275. Verification is waived for sale of up to 100 quintals of wheat. In addition to Rs 2,425 per quintal, Rs 20 for cleaning and sieving are also being credited to farmers’ accounts.
