Pakistan Sugar price soars to Rs 200/kg despite import plans

Sugar prices in Pakistan have surged past Rs 200/kg in major cities, with the national average reaching Rs 188.44/kg, up from Rs 145.88 a year ago. The spike is driven by seasonal demand, hoarding, and supply issues. Despite a government-approved sugar import of 500,000 tonnes, delays and market manipulation have limited its impact. Further hikes are feared without prompt action.

Sugar prices across Pakistan have exceeded Rs 200 per kilogram, breaking the psychological barrier this week. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported that average prices rose by Rs 3.52 in just seven days, bringing the new national average to Rs 188.44/kg. In key cities like Karachi, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, prices have already reached or exceeded Rs 200/kg.

Last week, the average price was recorded at Rs 184.92, and a year ago it stood at Rs 145.88/kg. This steep rise reflects both seasonal demand pressure and continued hoarding in markets, according to analysts. Market activities show that supplies have tightened, especially in urban wholesale and retail outlets.

To address shortages, the government approved the import of 500,000 tonnes of sugar in early June. The Ministry of National Food Security said the import plan aimed to stabilise prices and replenish stocks in major distribution centres. However, delays in clearance, logistics challenges, and suspected price manipulation by local traders have limited the import’s immediate impact.

Consumers are reporting empty shelves and sharp price hikes, particularly for retail packets and local brands. Households, especially low-income groups, are feeling the strain as monthly budgets get stretched. Small retailers warn that further increases could soon push prices above Rs 210/kg.

Lawmakers and consumer rights groups are calling on authorities to take action. They demand strict enforcement against hoarding, timely release of imported stocks, and better monitoring of local markets. Without intervention, experts warn, sugar prices could escalate further, turning essential food items into a growing economic burden.
