Fiji : Labour shortages at Lautoka Mill cause a drop in cane deliveries

Labour shortages have hit cane deliveries to Fiji’s Lautoka Mill, with only 61% of manual labour groups operating—the lowest among the three mills. Authorities are mobilising labour, addressing burnt cane issues, and expediting quality testing. Weekly stakeholder meetings will monitor progress and support farmers during the ongoing crushing season.

Labour shortages have severely affected cane deliveries to the Lautoka Mill, with serious concern that only 61 percent of manual labour groups are currently operating, marking the lowest participation rate among all three sugar mills.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Sugar Industry, Dr. Vinesh Kumar, held a meeting with Fiji Sugar Corporation, SugarCane Growers Council and Sugarcane Research Institute of Fiji, to address the ongoing challenges during the current crushing season.

Dr. Kumar directed the Sugar Cane Growers Council to work closely with the Fiji Sugar Corporation to mobilise additional labour and restore cane supply to normal levels.

The Ministry is also actively working with stakeholders to find solutions to mitigate the problems related to burnt cane.

Furthermore, the Sugarcane Research Institute of Fiji was tasked with expediting cane quality testing to develop effective strategies aimed at improving cane standards.

The Permanent Secretary is urging all stakeholders to commit to working around the clock throughout the crushing season to ensure that farmers receive the necessary support.

He highlighted the importance of continued cooperation and announced that such weekly meetings will be held to monitor progress and address emerging challenges.

This collaborative approach reflects the Ministry’s commitment to sustaining the sugar industry, supporting farmers, and enhancing the operational efficiency of the Lautoka Mill.
