India keen to modernise Bangladesh sugar mills

India has proposed technical and financial assistance to modernize Bangladesh’s state-owned sugar mills and produce refined sugar from imported raw sugar. At a Dhaka meeting, Indian food secretary Ravikant and Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu discussed an upcoming MoU, technology transfer, training for farmers, and cooperation under India’s Credit Line Agreement.

India has expressed its interest in extending technical assistance for modernization of state-owned sugar mills and manufacturing refined sugar from raw sugar in Bangladesh.

Towards this direction, an integral proposal will be placed to the ministry of industries from the Indian side soon. They hope to sign an MoU for implementation of the proposal.

An Indian delegation headed by Indian food secretary Ravikant made the proposal at a meeting with Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu at his secretariat office in the city on Thursday.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla, industries ministry additional secretary Begum Porag, Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation Chairman AKM Delwar Hossain were also present at the meeting.

At the meeting, Indian food secretary said that India produces surplus sugar using high tech sugar technology and they eager to export sugar in international market including neighboring countries by meeting local demands.

They are also interested to join their hands with Bangladesh by exporting raw sugar from their country. In this regard, Indian secretary offered financial support to Bangladesh under the Credit Line Agreement, as well as technical assistance.

Different aspects of cooperation in industrial sector were also discussed during the meeting. They also emphasized on modernisation of the sugar industry in Bangladesh, the production of refined sugar from raw sugar, training for sugar cane farmers and transfer of high-yielded cane seeds.

Welcoming the Indian proposal, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said that effective implementation of industry will be taken to implement the proposal after getting an integral proposal.

The minister also said that India standard organization NABL has already recognized the test certificate of BSTI in favor of 21products. The process of obtaining test certificates for another 12 products is under processing.

He also drew attention to the Indian Food Secretary and High Commissioner to accept the certification of these products.
