Bangladesh : Vegetables, edible oils become pricier


Vegetable prices in city markets surged last week, rising Tk 5–10 per kg due to heavy rains and farmers shifting to winter crops. Sponge gourd, okra, and colocasia stem ranged Tk 70–110, tomatoes Tk 130–140, brinjal Tk 90–130. Onion remained high at Tk 80–85 per kg, while oils, fish, meat, and eggs held steady.
Vegetable prices continued to soar in the city markets last week, increasing by Tk 5.0-10 a kg in a week, intensifying owes of the commoners.
Sponge gourd, pointed gourd, snake gourd, okra, eddo were retailed at Tk 80-100 a kg, tomato Tk 130-140 a kg, bitter gourd Tk 100-110 a kg, colocasia stem from Tk 90-110 a kg, and cucumber Tk 70-90 a kg. Brinjal prices were selling at Tk 90-130 a kg, while leafy vegetables Tk 15-35 a bunch on Friday.
Habibur Rahman, a vegetable vendor at Rayer Bazar in the city, said the supply of summer crops dropped notably due to heavy rain in places.
Besides, thousands of farmers were shifting to early winter crops, which was also responsible for the supply shortage. Vegetable prices would remain higher for the next two months during this seasonal transition, he added.
Onion prices still remained higher at Tk 80-85 per kg despite entrance of imported varieties, according to the kitchen market traders.
Meanwhile, loose soybean oil and palm oil marked a hike of Tk 5.0-6.0 a litre. Soybean oil was retailed at Tk 175-180 a litre, and palm oil at Tk 165-172 a litre on Friday.
Prices of fish, meat, and eggs remained static, maintaining their previous highs. Small-sized hilsa (below 700 grams) was selling at Tk 1,000-1,200 a kg, medium-sized at Tk 1,450-2,200 a kg, and big-sized at Tk 2,200-3,200 a kg.
Local rui was selling at Tk 680-1,200 a kg, while shrimp varieties were retailing at Tk 900-1,550 a kg. Cultured rui and katla were priced at Tk 350-500 a kg.
Egg was retailing at Tk 145-150 each dozen, broiler chicken Tk 185-195 per kg, and beef at Tk 780-800 a kg in the city markets.
