UNICA: Sugarcane processing expands in late August


UNICA reported a 10.68% rise in sugarcane processing to 50.06 million tons in late August. Total ethanol output remains 10.05% lower year-on-year, but corn ethanol surged 17.45% in the period. Since April, mills processed 403.94 million tons of cane and sold 14.41 billion liters of ethanol, down 3.38%.
UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sugarcane processing was up during the second half of August. Total ethanol production remains lower than last year, but corn ethanol production continues to trend higher.
Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 50.06 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of August, up 10.68% when compared to the same period of last year. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, reached 403.94 million metric tons, down 4.78% when compared to the same period of last year.
Mills in the region produced 2.42 billion liters (639.3 million gallons) of ethanol during the second half of August. Production included 1.46 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 7.61%, and 964.57 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 8.34%. Corn ethanol accounted for 405.92 million liters, or 16.77% of total production, during the period, up 17.45% when compared to the same period of last year.
Total ethanol production since the start of the current harvest season reached 18.48 billion liters, down 10.05% when compared to the same period of last year. Production included 11.57 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 11.57%, and 6.91 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 7.4%. Corn ethanol accounted for 3.73 billion liters of production, up 19.81%.
Mills in the region sold 2.93 billion liters of ethanol in August. Sales included 1.16 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 1.73%, and 1.77 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 10.36%. Domestic sales included 1.69 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 8.36%, and 1.11 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 6.87%.
Total ethanol sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 14.41 billion liters, down 3.38%. Sales included 9.09 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 6.28%, and 5.32 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 2%.
