Pakistan : Sugar prices rise sharply across Pakistan to Rs230 Per Kg

Sugar prices in Pakistan have surged sharply, rising by up to Rs45 per kilogram in a month, straining consumers amid high living costs. Rates now range from Rs185–200/kg in major cities, with Faisalabad hitting Rs230/kg. Traders cite limited supply, hoarding, transport costs, and delayed crushing operations as key factors.

Sugar prices have witnessed a sharp and unprecedented increase across major cities of Pakistan, with rates climbing by up to Rs45 per kilogram over the past month. The surge has placed additional financial strain on consumers already battling rising living costs.

According to market surveys and official sources, sugar prices have surged notably in nearly all provincial capitals and major urban centres.

In Rawalpindi, the retail price has gone up from Rs185 to Rs190 per kilogram, while in Islamabad, sugar is now being sold between Rs185 and Rs190 per kilogram.

In Peshawar, the commodity’s price has risen to Rs190–195 per kilogram, reflecting a steady upward trend in wholesale and retail markets.

The most significant increase has been reported in Lahore, where sugar rates have escalated from Rs179 to Rs200 per kilogram, marking a monthly hike of more than Rs20.

In the southern region, Karachi and Quetta have recorded similar patterns, with sugar now retailing between Rs190 and Rs200 per kilogram, compared to Rs190 a month earlier.

However, the steepest jump was observed in Faisalabad, where prices have soared from Rs185 to Rs230 per kilogram, a record-high in recent months. Multan has also seen a sharp rise, with rates increasing from Rs185 to Rs200 per kilogram.

Market insiders attribute the increase to a combination of limited supply, hoarding, and rising transportation costs, along with uncertainty over the upcoming sugarcane crushing season. Traders claim that delayed crushing operations and reduced stocks in mills have created supply shortages in several regions.
