UK increased wheat production due to the expansion of sown areas
The UK reported a 7.3% rise in wheat output to 11.96 million tonnes, driven by a 9.1% expansion in sown area despite slightly lower yields. Barley production fell 10% to 6.37 million tonnes. Rapeseed rose 7% to 893,000 tonnes but remains far below 2011 levels due to pest pressures.
The UK Department of Agriculture and the Environment said this year’s wheat harvest had risen by 7.3% to 11.96 million tonnes. The increase was driven by an increase in the area sown, which offset a slight drop in yields.
According to the department, the area under wheat increased by 9.1% to 1.7 million hectares, while the average yield fell by 1.7% to 7.2 tonnes/hectare. Barley production, however, fell to 6.37 million tonnes, down 10% from last year. Spring barley fell by 16% to 3.89 million tonnes, while winter barley showed a slight increase of 1.2% to 2.47 million tonnes.
The ministry also noted a recovery in rapeseed production, with the harvest up 7% to 893,000 tonnes. Despite this, the total is still far from peak levels.
By comparison, British farmers harvested a record 2.76 million tonnes of rapeseed in 2011. However, the crop has fallen out of favour due to widespread damage by flea beetles following the ban on a number of insecticides aimed at protecting bee populations.
