Morocco becomes Africa’s most reliable hub for US wheat imports
Morocco received its full contracted 61,700 tonnes of US wheat between June and mid-December, with deliveries executed on schedule. The country ranks third in Africa for contract reliability, while US wheat exports to the continent rose to 1.71 million tonnes. Morocco also plans 3.5 million tonnes of French wheat to ensure stable domestic supply.
Data from the United States Department of Agriculture shows that Morocco received its entire contracted volume of 61,700 tonnes of US wheat between June and mid December.
The USDA described the deliveries as being executed “on schedule and in full,” a performance that analysts say reflects disciplined logistics planning and close monitoring of maritime freight movements.
Across much of Africa, wheat imports in 2025 were disrupted by port congestion, financing constraints, and volatile shipping costs.
Against that backdrop, Morocco is now ranked third on the continent for contract reliability and delivery efficiency for US grain, according to agricultural analysts tracking trade flows.
The country’s performance comes as Africa’s appetite for American wheat rises sharply. USDA figures indicate that total US wheat exports to Africa for the 2025/26 season climbed to about 1.71 million tonnes, up from roughly 450,000 tonnes in the previous cycle.
Nigeria remains the continent’s largest importer, followed by South Africa, while demand is also expanding in Egypt, Algeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Morocco’s approach goes beyond punctual deliveries. To shield its food system from global price swings and geopolitical risks, the government is diversifying its supply base.
Authorities plan to secure around 3.5 million tonnes of French soft wheat for the remainder of the 2025/26 marketing year, complementing imports from North America.
By balancing supplies between the United States and Europe, Morocco aims to guarantee steady access to bread and flour for its domestic market.
This strategy, combined with reliable execution, is positioning the country as a reference point for food security management across Africa.
