Bihar: Subsidy on sugarcane seeds to improve cane cultivation
The Bihar government announced a 50% subsidy on sugarcane seeds for farmers with up to five acres of land. It plans to register all growers within 15 days, clear pending dues, and set up 25 new sugar mills to boost cultivation, processing capacity, and farmer incomes.
Patna: The Bihar government has announced a 50% subsidy on sugarcane seeds for growers with land holdings of up to five acres, reported Indian Mastermind.
The decision was announced by K. Senthil Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Sugarcane Industry Department, during a high-level review meeting held at the departmental auditorium on Friday. He directed officials to ensure that all sugarcane farmers in the state are registered within 15 days so they can access government schemes and receive timely payments for their produce.
Officials said the state is also working to increase the number of sugar mills to meet rising demand and avoid shortages of raw sugarcane. Plans are underway to set up 25 new sugar mills, which are expected to support higher cultivation and strengthen the local sugar industry.
The meeting focused on identifying areas suitable for sugarcane farming and increasing awareness among farmers about the benefits of growing the crop. Kumar also instructed that all pending payments to farmers must be cleared within 15 days, stressing that delays will not be accepted.
Officials reviewed ongoing initiatives, including the Chief Minister Sugarcane Development Scheme, farm machinery support programmes, jaggery promotion plans, and issues related to existing sugar mills. Farmers who perform well under certified seed programmes will be recognised with appreciation certificates.
The review meeting was attended by Joint Commissioner of Sugarcane JPN Singh, general managers of sugar mills, deputy directors, assistant directors, and other senior departmental officials.
