UNICA: Brazilian corn ethanol production remains high in late January
Brazil’s south-central region increased ethanol production in late January, with over 90% produced from corn feedstock. While sugarcane crushing and overall ethanol output this season remain slightly lower than last year, corn ethanol production has risen sharply, highlighting Brazil’s growing shift toward corn-based biofuel production.
UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced ethanol production was up during the second half of January. More than 90% of the ethanol produced during the two-week period was manufactured from corn feedstock.
Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 608,930 metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of January. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, 2025, reached 601.64 million metric tons, down 2.16% when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season.
Mills in the region produced 439.44 million liters (116.09 million gallons) of ethanol during the second half of January. Production included 255.83 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 7.59%, and 183.61 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 11.81% Corn ethanol accounted for 90.67% of total ethanol production during the period.
Total ethanol production since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 31.71 billion liters, down 4.64%. Production included 19.56 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 7.61%, and 12.15 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 0.54%. Corn ethanol accounted for 7.65 billion liters of production, up 13.05% when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season.
Mills in the region sold 2.85 billion liters of ethanol in January. Sales included 1.23 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 9.58%, and 1.62 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 15.32%.
Domestic sales in January included 1.6 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 11.97%, and 1.19 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 9.79%.
Total sales from the beginning of the current harvest season reached 29.14 billion liters, down 2.45%. Sales included 11.18 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 5.27%, and 17.97 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 6.7%.
