Iraq has built up strategic wheat reserves sufficient to cover domestic demand for the next 18 months, said Mohammed Hanoun, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Trade, in a comment to Rudaw English. He noted that despite regional trade disruptions caused by the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, the country maintains food supply stability thanks to its accumulated grain stocks.
The Ministry of Trade emphasized that the food situation in Iraq remains stable and well-managed. Authorities are closely monitoring regional developments and taking measures to prevent speculation or artificial price increases on essential food products.
Over the past several years, the government has focused on building strategic reserves of key staples, including wheat, rice, sugar, and cooking oil. These reserves provide Iraq with a buffer to meet population needs in the medium term, even if food imports remain constrained.
