Season 2025-26: India’s sugar production reaches to 273.9 LMT as season nears end
India’s sugar production reached 273.9 LMT as of April 14, up 9.56% year-on-year, driven by higher cane availability and improved efficiency. Maharashtra and Karnataka saw strong gains, while Uttar Pradesh recorded a slight dip. With 520 mills closed, the crushing season is nearing completion.
Sugar mills in India have produced 273.90 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugar as of April 14, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF).
Out of 541 mills that participated in the 2025–26 crushing season, 520 have closed operations so far. Crushing is nearing completion in most sugar-producing states, except Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu.
Overall output and recovery have improved due to higher cane availability and better efficiencies. Total sugar production stands at 273.90 LMT, compared to 254.30 LMT during the same period last season, marking a growth of about 9.56%. The sugar recovery rate last season was 9.37%.
A total of 541 mills operated in SY 2025–26, compared with 534 mills in SY 2024–25. However, only 21 mills are currently operational, significantly lower than the 35 mills running at the same time last year.
In Maharashtra, sugar production rose to 99.20 LMT from 80.65 LMT last season, while the average recovery remained unchanged at 9.50%.
In Uttar Pradesh, production declined slightly to 89.20 LMT from 90.95 LMT in the previous season. However, the average recovery improved to 10.20% from 9.70%.
In Karnataka, sugar output increased to 47.15 LMT from 40.40 LMT last season, with recovery improving to 8.60% from 8.50%.
The association noted that the crushing season is gradually coming to an end, particularly in western and southern regions, while some northern states are still continuing operations.
