Telangana tops sugar recovery at 10.75%, leads states in 2025–26 season
India’s wheat procurement may plunge 69% in MY 2026–27 due to delayed harvesting caused by unseasonal rains, which also hit crop quality. Procurement so far is sharply lower year-on-year, while mandi prices remain below MSP, raising concerns over farmer returns, government stocks, and supply management despite limited export approvals.
As the sugarcane crushing season enters its final stage, with only 21 mills still operating out of 541 that participated, Telangana has recorded the highest sugar recovery rate at 10.75 per cent. It is followed by Gujarat at 10.60 per cent and Uttar Pradesh at 10.20 per cent.
At the lower end, Karnataka has reported the lowest recovery rate in the country at 8.60 per cent, with Punjab slightly higher at 8.70 per cent.
According to data released by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF), 520 of the 541 mills that operated in the 2025–26 season have closed so far. Crushing operations are nearing completion in most sugar-producing states, except Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Tamil Nadu.
Higher cane availability and improved efficiencies have supported overall output and recovery. Total sugar production has reached 273.90 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), compared with 254.30 LMT during the same period last season, marking a growth of about 9.56 per cent. The recovery rate last season stood at 9.37 per cent.
In Telangana, seven sugar mills participated in the crushing season, producing about 2 LMT of sugar by crushing 18.60 LMT of sugarcane.
In Gujarat, 14 mills operated during the season and produced 7.50 LMT of sugar by crushing 70.75 LMT of cane.
A total of 541 mills operated in the 2025–26 season, compared with 534 mills in 2024–25. At present, only 21 mills remain operational, down from 35 mills during the same period last year.
Telangana had also topped sugar recovery in the 2024–25 season with a recovery rate of 10.65 per cent, followed by Gujarat at 10.10 per cent.
