Government raises Maize MSP to Rs. 2410 per quintal for Kharif 2026-27

India has raised the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for maize to ₹2,410 per quintal for the 2026-27 kharif season, ensuring farmers a 56% margin over production costs. The move reflects continued government support for remunerative crop prices, with maize emerging among the better-paying kharif crops alongside bajra and moong.

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an increase in the Minimum Support Price for maize to Rs. 2410 per quintal for the Kharif Marketing Season 2026-27, up from Rs. 2400 per quintal in the previous season, marking an increase of Rs. 10 per quintal.

The cost of production for maize has been assessed at Rs. 1544 per quintal, and at the newly approved MSP, farmers stand to earn a margin of 56% over their production costs. This places maize among the better-performing crops in terms of farmer returns, with only moong at 61% and bajra, which is at par with maize at 56%, offering a higher or equal margin among Kharif cereals.

Since 2013-14, the MSP for maize has risen by Rs. 1100 per quintal, a jump of 84%, reflecting the government’s stated commitment to ensuring remunerative prices for farmers. The MSP hike is consistent with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement of fixing support prices at a level of at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production.

Overall, the government has approved revised MSPs for 14 Kharif crops for the 2026-27 marketing season, with the highest absolute increase going to sunflower seed at Rs. 622 per quintal, followed by cotton at Rs. 557 per quintal.
