The Philippines imported nearly 400,000 metric tons of rice in April 2026 to stabilize domestic inventories and temper retail prices, according to preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The import volume, valued at $161.93 million on a free-on-board basis, excludes rice still in the husk or paddy rice, the PSA said.

Vietnam maintained its position as the premier grain supplier, eclipsing alternative regional trade partners. In April, Vietnamese shipments accounted for 92.2 percent of the total rice import value, translating to $149.24 million.

Local economists noted that this concentration underscores the deep reliance of Manila on Hanoi to shore up its national food security chain.

The remaining 7.8 percent of the import value was distributed among four other Asian nations. Cambodia emerged as the second-largest exporter for the period, securing a 2.8-percent market share valued at $4.59 million.

Thailand followed with 2.2 percent of the import value at $3.48 million. India contributed 1.8 percent of the import value, equivalent to $2.84 million, while Myanmar rounded out the top five suppliers with a 1.1 percent market share valued at $1.78 million.

The country’s total food imports fell 10.7 percent to $1.18 billion in April from $1.33 billion a year ago. This also represented a 15.8-percent drop from the $1.41 billion recorded in March 2026. Othel V. Campos

The PSA said that in terms of volume, food imports retreated by 12.8 percent year-on-year to 1.26 million metric tons.
