Record ethanol output boosts U.S. Corn demand and supports rural economy
Record U.S. ethanol production of 16.4 billion gallons and record exports of 2.2 billion gallons in 2025 boosted corn demand, consuming 5.6 billion bushels and supporting farm incomes. Approval of E15 fuel in California is expected to further increase ethanol use, benefiting corn growers and rural economies.
Record ethanol production and wider access to fuel markets are strengthening demand for U.S. corn and helping support farm incomes in 2026, according to new industry outlook data released by the Renewable Fuels Association.
The ethanol industry produced a record 16.4 billion gallons in 2025, while exports reached an all-time high of 2.2 billion gallons, reflecting stronger domestic fuel consumption and rising international demand, RFD TV reported.
A major development for the sector came with approval for E15 fuel use in California, one of the largest gasoline markets in the United States. Industry stakeholders expect the move to create new long-term opportunities for higher ethanol blending.
Ethanol continued to play a central role in supporting the agricultural sector, with approximately 5.6 billion bushels of corn used for fuel production in 2025.
The demand helped absorb a record U.S. corn harvest of 17 billion bushels and eased pressure on crop prices during a period of strong supply.
Industry estimates showed ethanol processing generated around $2.25 in additional value per bushel of corn, contributing to investment across rural communities and improving farm income prospects.
The U.S. ethanol industry currently operates 198 biorefineries with installed production capacity approaching 18.5 billion gallons annually.
Iowa remains the country’s largest ethanol-producing state, followed by Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota and South Dakota, highlighting the industry’s strong presence across major corn-producing regions.
Looking ahead, industry leaders identified nationwide year-round access to E15 fuel and continued support under the Renewable Fuel Standard as key priorities to further expand fuel demand, strengthen energy security and support agricultural markets.
