FAO helps increase wheat production in Afghanistan

FAO’s agricultural support program in Afghanistan helped 600,000 farmers increase wheat yields by 32.8% during the 2023/24 season through certified seeds, fertilizers, and extension services. The initiative added 216,000 tonnes of wheat production—4.3% of national output—enough to feed about 1.2 million people for a year.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has significantly boosted wheat production and yields in Afghanistan through a large-scale agricultural support program. In the 2023/24 season, FAO distributed certified wheat seeds, fertilizers, and extension services to around 600,000 farmers across 417 districts in all provinces of the country.

An evaluation of the program shows that participating farmers achieved a 32.8% increase in grain yields compared to control groups, equivalent to an additional 0.36 tonnes of wheat per beneficiary household. On a national level, the intervention contributed about 216,000 tonnes of additional wheat production, representing 4.3% of Afghanistan’s total wheat output in 2024.

According to FAO estimates, this additional production is sufficient to feed approximately 1.2 million people for an entire year, highlighting the strong impact of targeted agricultural support on food security in vulnerable regions.
