Rain deficit: Telangana farmers advised to go in for cultivation of low-water crops
Asifabad District Collector K Haritha advised farmers to reduce paddy cultivation due to rainfall deficit, low reservoir levels, and declining groundwater. She recommended shifting to less water-intensive crops such as maize, sunflower, and red gram to conserve water and minimize potential financial losses.
Asifabad: Given the rainfall deficit in district during the current Kharif season, farmers should focus on cultivating crops that require less water (semi-dry crops) rather than relying on paddy cultivation, District Collector K Haritha stated in a press release here on Tuesday.
She noted that since local tanks, ponds, and irrigation projects have not filled to capacity and groundwater levels are likely to decline, the extent of paddy cultivation dependent on these water sources could be adversely affected. She advised farmers to plan ahead and select crops based on available water resources.
She further suggested that farmers relying on borewells could avoid financial losses by reducing the area under paddy cultivation and instead growing crops that require less water, such as maize, sunflower, and red gram (pigeon pea).
