Pakistan : 45 Islamabad Flour Mills Running Out of Wheat Stocks, Flour Shortage Feared in Twin Cities
Pakistan’s Flour Mills Association warned that Punjab’s suspension of wheat supply permits threatens flour shortages in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. It urged authorities to restore permits immediately, warning prolonged disruptions could trigger black marketing, higher flour prices, mill closures, and wider regional supply instability.
According to the association, the Punjab Food Department verbally halted wheat supply permits on July 13 without issuing any written notification or official order. PFMA said the decision has left nearly 45 flour mills in Islamabad at risk of running out of wheat stocks if supplies are not restored immediately.
The association explained that flour mills in Islamabad have traditionally depended on wheat supplied from Punjab to meet demand across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, and Kotli Sattian.
It warned that any prolonged disruption could create an artificial shortage, fuel black marketing, encourage corruption, and destabilize the regional flour market.
PFMA further cautioned that flour mills in Rawalpindi would also suspend operations in solidarity with Islamabad-based mills if wheat permits remain blocked, potentially worsening the supply situation across the twin cities.
The association said the Punjab Food Department would be responsible for any disruption in flour availability if the issue is not resolved promptly.
Calling for immediate action, PFMA urged the Punjab Food Department to restore wheat supply permits and reactivate the online permit portal. It also appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to intervene and prevent a potential flour crisis in the federal capital and adjoining areas.
The warning comes at a time when flour prices are already under pressure in several parts of the country, raising concerns that any supply disruption could translate into higher prices for consumers.
