Record wheat crop expected in Turkey

Turkey is forecast to harvest a record 22.5 million tonnes of wheat in 2026-27, up 33% year-on-year, aided by favorable weather. Higher production is expected to reduce wheat imports to 5 million tonnes, while barley output is projected to jump 58% to 8.1 million tonnes.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Aided by favorable weather and above-average rainfall, Turkey is expected to harvest a record wheat crop in the 2026-27 marketing year, according to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture.

The FAS forecast Turkish wheat output at 22.5 million tonnes, a 33% increase over the previous year’s harvest

While high yields are expected, quality issues are anticipated in the southern and southeastern parts of the country that received excessive rainfall, particularly during the spring, the FAS noted. However, regions in the western part of the country, which received relatively less spring rainfall, are showing high quality and yields, the FAS said.

“Although there is a shift toward milling wheat rather than durum wheat in the Central Anatolia region, the Southeastern Anatolia region continues to dominate durum wheat production,” the FAS said.

Wheat consumption for 2026-27 is forecast to reach 18.7 million tonnes, 4% higher than the previous year. This is partly due to a projected rise in animal feed consumption.

“It is anticipated that due to quality issues with the harvest in some regions this year, there will be a higher supply of feed wheat,” the FAS said. “On the other hand, regarding demand for food-grade wheat, a decline has been observed in Turkey in recent years, due to both consumer preferences and demographic trends.”

Due to the dramatic increase in domestic production, wheat imports are seen declining to 5 million tonnes in 2026-27, down from 6.4 million tonnes last year.

The FAS noted that the barley crop also has benefited from the abundant rainfall this year, with total output expected to increase by 58% year on year to 8.1 million tonnes in 2026-27. Because of the production increase, barley imports will be slashed to 150,000 tonnes from 1.4 million tonnes.
