Bangladesh approves import of 25,000 tonnes of sugar amid food supply measures
Bangladesh approved imports of 25,000 tonnes of sugar from Indonesia at $514 per tonne to strengthen domestic stocks. The government also approved 100,000 tonnes of Vietnamese parboiled rice, 20 million litres of refined soybean oil and 10,000 tonnes of lentils to ensure stable food supplies.
Bangladesh has approved the import of 25,000 tonnes of sugar through an international tender as part of a broader procurement plan to maintain food stocks and ensure stable domestic supplies.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP), chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, approved the sugar import proposal at a meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday, Dhaka Tribune reported.
PT Trinity Cahya Energy of Indonesia was recommended as the supplier. The sugar will be imported at a cost of Tk157.86 crore, with the price fixed at $514 per tonne.
The committee also approved the import of 100,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice from Vietnam under a government-to-government arrangement. The rice will be procured from Vietnam Southern Food Corporation (VINAFOOD II) at $416 per tonne, at a total cost of Tk515.05 crore.
In addition, the committee approved the procurement of 2 crore litres of refined soybean oil through international open tendering. PT Trinity Cahya Energy will supply the oil at $1.15 per litre, at a total cost of Tk282.56 crore.
The government also cleared the purchase of 10,000 tonnes of lentils in 50-kg bags through national open tendering. Rajshahi-based Nabil Naba Foods Ltd was recommended as the supplier at Tk78.96 per kg, involving a total cost of Tk78.96 crore.
The procurement decisions are aimed at maintaining adequate stocks of essential food commodities and preventing disruptions in domestic supplies.
