EU wheat and barley exports lag well behind last year’s pace

EU soft wheat exports nearly halved to 1.48 million tonnes in 2026/27 through August 16, from 2.90 million tonnes a year earlier. Barley exports fell more than threefold to 600,000 tonnes, while corn imports rose 43% to 2.12 million tonnes. However, incomplete data from several countries may affect reported trade volumes.

EU soft wheat exports from the start of the 2026/27 season through August 16 reached 1.48 mln tons, Reuters reported, citing European Commission data. This is almost half the 2.90 mln tons exported during the same period last season.

Barley exports have fallen even more sharply. Since the start of the season, the EU has exported around 600 thsd tons, compared with 2.12 mln tons a year earlier, meaning shipments have dropped by more than threefold.

Meanwhile, EU corn imports are moving in the opposite direction. As of August 16, the bloc had imported 2.12 mln tons of corn, compared with 1.48 mln tons in the same period of 2025/26, an increase of around 43%.

However, actual EU trade volumes may differ from the reported figures. The European Commission warned that trade data remain incomplete for several countries, including France, Bulgaria, Ireland and Greece. Some data for Romania and Poland are also missing for the current marketing year.
