E20 petrol available across Goa, government says 1,209 OMC inspections found no violations
Goa supplies E20 petrol at 90 fuel stations operated by IOCL, BPCL and HPCL. The government is conducting consumer-awareness campaigns and inspections, with no violations reported. Porvorim: Consumers across Goa are currently being supplied E20 petrol at 90 fuel stations, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told the state Legislative Assembly in a written reply on Monday, The Times of India reported.
Sawant was responding to a question raised by Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira regarding the availability and sale of E20 petrol in the state.
The 90 retail outlets are operated by the three major oil marketing companies — Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL).
The Chief Minister said petrol pump dealers are not specifically required by the Goa government to display prominent notices warning that E20 petrol may not be suitable for vehicles that are not designed or certified to use the higher ethanol blend.
However, HPCL has instructed its retail outlet dealers to display E20 fuel-awareness signage in line with applicable guidelines.
The government and oil marketing companies are also conducting public-information campaigns to create awareness among consumers about vehicle compatibility with E20 petrol, according to the reply.
The state has also been monitoring petrol pumps through inspections. During the past three years, OMCs conducted 530 inspections at BPCL outlets, 346 at IOCL outlets and 333 at HPCL outlets. Sawant said no violations were detected during these inspections.
The Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs separately conducted 31 inspections during the same period, with no violations reported.
For consumers seeking ethanol-free petrol, two IOCL outlets in Goa offer XP100, a premium petrol that does not contain ethanol. These are Heera Petroleum in Panaji and the COCO outlet at Verna.
The availability of E20 at most retail outlets marks the growing adoption of higher ethanol-blended petrol in Goa, while the government continues to focus on consumer awareness and compliance at fuel stations.
