Brazil’s July bagasse power sales hit decade-low; India generation also falls
Brazil’s bagasse-based electricity sales fell to a nine-year July low at 2,682 GWh, despite higher cumulative sales. India’s July generation plunged to 132 GWh, with 2025/26 season output down 5.9% year-on-year to 8,901 GWh.
Brazil’s bagasse-based electricity sales to the national grid fell to their lowest level for the month of July since 2015, even as India’s bagasse power generation also declined during the month, according to the International Sugar Organization’s (ISO) Market Report for August 2026, released on September 7, 2026.
Brazil’s bagasse power sales reached 2,682 GWh in July, up from 2,136 GWh in June but down from 2,812 GWh in July 2025, according to data from the Chamber of Electric Energy Commercialisation (CCEE) cited in the report. Cumulative sales for the year so far reached 9,996 GWh, up 1.1 per cent against the same period last year.
In India, bagasse-based electricity generation totalled 132 GWh in July, sharply down from 997 GWh generated during the same month of 2025, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) cited in the report. This brought cumulative bagasse-based power generation for the 2025/26 season (October-September) so far to 8,901 GWh, a 5.9 per cent decline from the 9,456 GWh generated during the same period of the previous season.
