Andhra Pradesh : Fresh jaggery hits record price in Anakapalli amid supply shortage

The new jaggery season at Anakapalli market, Andhra Pradesh, has begun with record prices of Rs 6,090 per 100 kg, driven by strong demand from Odisha, West Bengal, and exports. Limited supply, declining sugarcane cultivation, labour shortages, and struggling local sugar factories have reduced market turnover to below Rs 50 crore.

Visakhapatnam: The new jaggery lumps that have arrived at the Anakapalli market, the second-largest jaggery market in the country, are fetching record prices for both traders and farmers. The fresh, coloured jaggery is selling at Rs 6,090 per 100 kg. However, jaggery production only began a few days ago, and current supply is falling short of growing demand. The Anakapalli market typically sees an annual turnover of Rs 50 crore.Preparations for the new jaggery season usually begin after Dasara each year. Around 900 lumps entered the market in the first two days. Until Tuesday, only stored jaggery was being sold, but the arrival of the new batch has brought renewed energy to the Anakapalli jaggery market. There is especially high demand from Odisha and West Bengal, with exports also moving through this market, according to trader Malla Srinivasa Rao.”At the moment, supply is not meeting demand since these are the early days of the season. We expect more orders by the second week of Nov. However, a decline in sugarcane cultivation has led to a drop in jaggery production in recent years,” he added. The Anakapalli Jaggery Market Yard once received more than 20 lakh lumps annually, but this has now decreased to 10 lakh.

Market turnover, which previously touched Rs 100 crore, has fallen below Rs 50 crore. This decline is attributed to reduced sugarcane farming in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in the North Andhra districts, due to rising input costs, labour shortages, and the closure of several sugar factories. Sugarcane cultivation in the state has shrunk from 1.25 lakh hectares to below 40,000 hectares. The only sugar factory in the cooperative sector in the state, the Govada Sugar Factory, is also struggling due to severe financial issues. “The market yard in Anakapalli used to see around 14,000 lumps per day, but that number has now dropped below 8,000,” said another trader, Konatala Ravi.
